Emma Douglas is a modern-day literature scholar and Jane Austen expert whose world is rocked by the betrayal and abandonment of her husband and the loss of her career as a college professor following scandalous accusations of plagiarism against her. Everything Emma has always believed is challenged – God’s goodness, the reward for a life of integrity, and Jane Austen’s seeming promise of a romantic, happy ending for every woman in love.

With nothing left to lose, she travels to England at the request of a mysterious woman claiming to possess Austen’s lost correspondence. The woman has Emma embark on a sort of scavenger hunt that takes her to locations important to Austen during her life. Emma’s goal is to gain possession of the letters and re-instate her good name as a literary authority, but, of course, God has other plans. Emma’s beliefs are indeed challenged, but they are beliefs she is less aware of like true significance, loyalty, and the value of adversity and we as readers are the better for it.

Jane Austen Ruined My Life has intrigue, romance, history and substance. Anyone who has experienced disappointment or disillusionment can relate to Emma’s story and be inspired by it. I was already a Jane Austen fan and now I am a Beth Pattillo fan too.

  1. I liked this book too. I really enjoyed the quest aspect of the story, although I was a little dissatisfied with the ending. :) Looking forward to her next book!
