CHOOSING TO SEE
By Marybeth Chapman with Ellen Vaughn
Published by Revell
ISBN# 978-0800719913
Hard Back
288 Pages

Back Cover: I've told my kids for years that God doesn't make mistakes," writes Mary Beth Chapman, wife of Grammy award winning recording artist Steven Curtis Chapman. "Would I believe it now, when my whole world as I knew it came to an end?" Covering her courtship and marriage to Steven Curtis Chapman, struggles for emotional balance, and living with grief, Mary Beth's story is our story--wondering where God is when the worst happens. In Choosing to SEE, she shows how she wrestles with God even as she has allowed him to write her story--both during times of happiness and those of tragedy. Readers will hear firsthand about the loss of her daughter, the struggle to heal, and the unexpected path God has placed her on. Even as difficult as life can be, Mary Beth Chapman Chooses to SEE.

REVIEW: I was thrilled to receive a review copy of such a moving, honest, and at times out-loud funny book. Mary Beth Chapman is as real as they come. As I read this book I felt as if I were sitting down with Mary Beth talking about her life's journey over coffee. Choosing to See was a refreshing read because Mary Beth is open, real, candid and just plain funny. Yes, there are parts in this book that will rip your heart out, it did the day we heard about this tragic event that took place in this family but it also gave me hope to read about how they received encouragement and love in their hopeless situation! It was quite an amazing read. God provided for them in that tragic hour, gave them a strength they know didn’t know they had and God surrounded them with good, faithful and compassionate friends.

In the beginning I got choked up about how Mary Beth writes to each of her children in the front dedications. She writes a paragraph or so about each one. Then she writes to Steven as well. Stephen writes a forward in this book along with Beth Moore.

Steven says this about his wife, “This book and the hours Mary Beth has given to create it are part o a “sacred trust” that our family believes we were given May 21st, 2008, when Maria was carried to heaven in the arms of Jesus.”

Mary Beth says this about her family, “I know that Satan took a massive swing at our entire family on May 21st, and thought he was going to destroy us for good! So, October 4th, 2008 was not just a day we celebrated our daughters wedding, it was a victorious day! God overwhelmed us with joy that eased our sorrow and allowed us to see that, out of this horrible story, there were redemptive pieces already being written by the healer of all wounds.”

Mary Beth shares her heart, “The truth is, I was born with a plan. I wanted life to be safe and predictable, my plan was to marry someone with a nice nine-to-five schedule and have a tidy, organized life –everything under control.”

Of course that’s not what happened to her. She then said this, “If I had lived the life I thought I wanted – I know I wouldn’t have experienced the grace or the miracles of God in the ways I have…what I’ve found is that it’s in the most unlikely times and places of hurt and chaos that God gives us a profound sense of his presence and the light of His hope in the dark places.”

I laughed, cried, and rejoiced with Mary Beth Chapman as she shared her life’s story –from childhood, college, meeting Steven, having babies and what lead them to adopt three special little girls. She shares her struggles, victories, and everything in-between. The Chapman’s are a very special family. Mary Beth gives us a glimpse into how God has been very real, personal and cared for them before, during and after this tragedy. He didn’t abandon them but brought them through and is still healing their hurts. Mary Beth as joined the Women of Faith team and will be speaking at conferences with them this year, she will be sharing her journey with God in a public way. Wow, what courage, and what a testimony she shares. This book is definitely an encouragement and gives so much hope in the fact that God never leaves us, and always provides for us, and our families in ways we couldn’t even imagine.

"I am reading one of the most beautiful, heart-wrenching, tender, honest, transparent, and hopeful books on the journey of suffering.' Choosing to See' is by Mary Beth Chapman about the loss of her 5 year old daughter. Life can be a kaleidoscope of pain, and this book is a salve of grace for many wounds. 27. Can't wait to read the book because like Mary Beth, I wanted to have a nice safe life and be a wife to a nice Christian man who worked on a normal wwekly 9-5 workschedule. But, that has not happened. Just reading the review and other things about the incident in May, 2008 have left me awed by this family and their faith.

  28. My husband and I have listened to and loved your music for many years. In fact since before we married, and we've now been married 17 years. It has been a great blessing and encouragement to us through the years. When we heard of the tragic event that occurred, our hearts were saddened and your family was in our prayers. Seeing how your family has encouraged one another and come through this has been a blessing. I pray that God continues to comfort and give you peace.

  35. Hi Marybeth, Saying you are sorry that this happened is the first thing anyone says when you lose someone, but it also means that the person does care about you. I have dealt with loss and accused God of not caring about me but I regain my thoughts and knew that this lost was for a reason even if I did not understand why my brother had to die such a terrible death.
God will be there for you when you don't think he is, and if you look to him you will find him and know he loves you.

  37. I've always remembered hearing Steven Curtis Chapman's music on the radio, but I never became a fan of "SCC" until I saw him on one of my favorite family t.v. shows --"Doc" (which starred country music singer Billy Ray Cyrus in the early/mid 2000's). The episode was called "Fearless" and "SCC" played the part of a music teacher facing a debilitating disease . . . Our whole family was shocked and saddened by little Maria's death, but it was so inspiring to see this family pull together and pull closer to God during that time. I'm not even old enough to consider having a family of my own, so I can't imagine what Mrs. Chapman must have went through, but I know God is using her and the Chapman family in an amazing way!

  39. I've been a fan of Steven Curtis Chapman's music for a while, but I felt a connection to Maria Sue, as I found out while reading the news after her death, that we shared the same birthday . . . Some of my siblings teased me about crying about someone I didn't even know, but I didn't care . . . in a way, we were sisters. Sisters in Christ. The Chapman family were (and are) an amazing example to Christians and also to the whole world that was watching them cope with this tragedy.

  42. I always wondered how I would handle a loss of a child or my husband. Mary Sue, I love the phrase that you say it was the devil that tried to destroy your world. Sometimes I think we forget that Satan is still working against God as hard as he can. I would love to read your book for free, but I will be reading it whether or not I win!! God Bless!

  51. When I first heard the news about the Chapman Family, I was so sad for them. I can't even imagine what they felt or went through. I am inspired by their lives, and really the words to one of my favorite worship songs strikes home when I think of them....."You give and take away, you give and take away, my heart will choose to say, Lord blessed be Your name!"
I hope to win this book, but I will be buying it if I don't.
