GIVEAWAY - A PLACE OF ABUNDANCE by JULIE BELL

1, Did you always have the writing bug? If now, how did you get started as a writer?

Yes, I have always had the writing bug! When I was little I used to write poems, stories, and songs. I used to make up my own songs, and then coerce my younger sister and cousin to sing them with me. I even made up dance moves to some of them. I entered writing contests such as Mosaic and Reflections contests. I’ve always been an avid reader growing up and I used to envy those who put pen to paper and the result was an amazing feat of storytelling. I wanted that to be me one day though I have to admit that I never actually thought it would be. God allowing me to write novels that bring glory to Him is a dream come true for me.

2. What do you like most about being an author?

I love having the privilege of shaping a story however I’d like. God gives me characters and storylines and it’s wonderful to be able to craft that into a complete novel.

3.Can you tell me about two WOW—moments you’ve had since being published? What made it a wow for you?

One of the first wow moments I had was after a friend of mine read the novel for the first time. He sent me a message after he finished and told me that the novel caused him to ask himself about his own relationship with the Lord and helped him to reexamine an area of his faith. Talk about a wow moment for me! As a Christian author, this is what I pray for – that readers will take away the message of faith from the novel and not just enjoy the story.

Another wow moment came when a reader told me that she absolutely loved the novel and was so sad that it was over that she planned to read it again. I know that there are novels I’ve read that I was sad when it was over but for someone to feel that way about my novel was a little surreal for me.

4. What authors inspired you most in your writing?

Christian fiction is the main genre I read and the Christian fiction authors that have inspired me the most are Lori Wick, Catherine Palmer, Robin Lee Hatcher, Lori Copeland, and Janette Oke.

5. If you had the opportunity to write anything on any topic (and you were guaranteed a market to sell it in) what would you write? Why?

I would write a children’s book series sort of like the Berenstain Bears series. I don’t know what my main characters would be – if they would be animals or children, but I think it would be fun to create a series and just let the stories flow. Almost like a children’s TV show in books.

6. How personal are your novels? How much of you are in them? Do tell?

I think authors put a piece of themselves in every novel they write whether they mean to or not. A Place of Abundance is not based on anything in my life but my friends all tell me they can hear my voice as they read the novel and they chuckle at words that they know I would use. One friend came across the word “spiel” and told me she started laughing because she could hear me and that was something I would say.

7. Can you give us a sneak peek into what you are working on now and when it will be released?

I have finished the sequel to A Place of Abundance! The title to the new book is A Place of Acceptance. It is scheduled to be released in the fall of 2011. I don't have the book cover yet, we're still in the works. The setting is the same and the main characters are still there but the story focuses around two new main characters. I think the readers will enjoy it!

QUESTIONS I JUST HAD TO ASK

If you could visit any place in the world where would you go and what would you do?

I would visit France. I am a French teacher and still haven’t been to France yet! Ideally I would love to stay with a host family and really absorb the French culture along with visiting the tourist spots in Paris such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Notre Dame, Sacré-Coeur, taking a boat ride along the Seine river, and visiting Versailles, Giverny, Normandy, and the French Riviera.

If you could be apart of any two events in the history of the world which two would you pick.

Both of my events come from the New Testament. I always thought it would be neat to be the in the crowd that heard Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount. I would like to have been there to hear Him speak. It’s such a powerful message I’m sure that everyone in the crowd was probably moved beyond words.

I also think it would be cool to be a witness to one of the many miracles that Jesus performed – like seeing Lazarus being brought back to life or being there when Jesus put mud on the blind man’s eyes and he was healed.

If you could hang out with any two people alive or dead in the history of the world, who would you pick and why? What would you do?

The first one would be Julie Andrews. She is a very gifted vocalist and actress and I would love to sit down with her and talk to her about how she started, how she trained her voice, and how her life has changed since her surgery that has rendered her unable to sing like she did in her prime.

The second one would be Billy Graham. I’ve always wanted to meet him. I remember going to a Billy Graham crusade as a child and I would enjoy the opportunity to speak with him about his ministry and hear all of the amazing works that God has done in and through his life. I would also like to observe him and have him teach me his way of approaching people to share the gospel with them.

What is your goal or mission as a Christian writer?

My goal is to spread the gospel of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I view writing as my ministry and I pray that God will use it to reach others. I want my readers to learn about God’s love, grace, mercy, and forgiveness. My life verse is Acts 20:24 : “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me - the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace.” (NIV).

What T.V. shows were you most passionate as a kid? (You know the ones you couldn’t miss each week)

When I was really young, I loved watching cartoons like Thunder Cats, She-Ra, Smurfs, and Alvin and the Chipmunks. As I was going through middle school, Saved by the Bell was very popular. I’ve seen every episode at least twice!

What THREE things would you not want to live without?

1) My Bible – it is my guide to get me through this life. I couldn’t make it without the wisdom and counsel that God has given me through His word.

2) My DVD player and DVD’s – I love to watch movies and reruns of TV shows. Especially the classics like “I Love Lucy”!

3) Popcorn. Popcorn is my all time favorite salty snack. I eat it almost every day!

What THREE movies could you watch over and over again?

1) Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast.” I love Disney films and this one is my favorite. It’s a classic story of how what matters most is what a person is like on the inside.

2) “White Christmas” – it’s one of my all time favorite Christmas movies! I love the music!

3) “The Sound of Music” – I absolutely love this film. The characters, the story, and the music are all fantastic.

What movie affected you as a kid? Why?

All of the musicals –  Mary Poppins, Oklahoma, Singin’ in the Rain, The Sound of Music,The King and I, My Fair Lady, South Pacific. I love to sing. I have been a singer my entire life and I love how people just burst into song. Wouldn’t it be fun if we did that in real life? The stories were clean entertainment that put a smile on my face and inspired me to continue to pursue my love of music (I minored in vocal performance and sing locally).

A Place of Abundance
By Julie Bell
268 Pages

Back Cover: "'Look!' a voice in the train car rang out. Richard looked out the window to see five horses riding alongside the train. Oh God, Richard inwardly cried. What are we going to do? Richard heard the sound of guns fired and slid his eyes shut. His last thought was of home.

Three years later, eighteen-year-old Alicia Barnes is still dealing with the death of her father. When she suddenly loses her mother in an unfortunate accident, Alicia is devastated and promises to never trust God again. She decides to start a new life in a new town as a schoolteacher. There she meets Caleb Carter, a young ranch owner whose parents were killed three years ago. As Alicia begins to make friends with Caleb and his younger sister, Claire, she wonders how a loving God could allow terrible things to happen to good people. Then, an unwelcome band of outlaws appear in town, and Alicia is faced with two choices—holding on to a bitter heart or accepting the peace of forgiveness. Will Alicia learn to trust God and allow him to bring her to A Place of Abundance?"
