About The Mountains Bow Down: Everything's going to work out. Time away always makes things better . . ..

That's what FBI Special Agent Raleigh Harmon believes as she boards a cruise to Alaska. A land of mountains and gems and minerals, The Last Frontier is a dream destination for this forensic geologist who's hoping to leave behind a hectic work schedule and an engagement drained of romance.

But when a passenger goes missing and winds up dead, Raleigh's vacation suddenly gets lost at sea. The ship's security chief tries to rule the death a suicide, but Raleigh's forensics background points to a much darker conclusion: Somewhere onboard, a ruthless murderer walks free.

Engulfed by one of her toughest cases yet, Raleigh requests assistance from the FBI and receives her nemesis-perpetual ladies man Special Agent Jack Stephanson. As the cruise ship sails through the Inside Passage, Raleigh has five days to solve a high-profile murder, provide consultation for a movie filming onboard, and figure out her increasingly complicated feelings for Jack-who might not be such a jerk after all.

And that's only her work life. Family offers even more challenges. Joined on the cruise by her mother and aunt, Raleigh watches helplessly as disturbing rifts splinter her family.

Like the scenery that surrounds the cruise ship, Raleigh discovers a situation so steep and so complex that even the mountains might bow down.

Summary: That's what FBI Special Agent Raleigh Harmon believes as she boards a cruise to Alaska.

Engulfed by one of her toughest cases yet, Raleigh requests assistance from the FBI and receives her nemesis-handsome Special Agent Jack Stephanson. As the cruise ship sails through the Inside Passage, Raleigh has five days to solve a high-profile murder, provide consultation for a movie filming onboard, and figure out her increasingly complicated feelings for Jack-who might not be as arrogant as she originally thought.

And that's only her work life. Family offers even more challenges. Joined on the cruise by her mother and aunt, Raleigh watches helplessly as disturbing rifts splinter her family.

Like the scenery that surrounds the cruise ship, Raleigh discovers a mystery so daunting that even the mountains might bow down before it.

Review: I was so thankful to receive a review copy of such an exciting, fun, suspenseful, and heartfelt novel. I enjoyed reading about Raleigh, a female FBI agent, who specializes in fore4nsic geology and is good at what she does. Sibella went to school to be a geologist so its fascinating to read how geology helps Raleigh uncover clues she never would have discovered with out it.

I liked how Sibella had Raleigh sty true to her calling in life no matter how the male FBI Agents treated her. I also liked Raleigh’s honesty in her feelings and how she struggled in putting God into the driver seat of her life 24/7.

Giorello takes her readers on a beautiful Alaskan cruise along with her mom and eccentric Aunt who has arranged for Raleigh to be a consultant on a movie being filmed on the cruise ship. She thought this would be a great way to enjoy each other’s company, have fun and get their trip paid for.

Things were beautiful and fun until Raleigh discovers a female body hanging from the back of the cruise ship. Head of security seeks Raleigh’s help in this case because she’s FBI and the woman found dead was famous actor Milo’s wife.

Milo was the one she was consulting on the film on how to be an FBI agent. Milo and everyone else on this project was hoping for a box office smash hit with this movie. Milo needed this to get back into the game.

Sibella Giorello pens an intriguing web of mystery, suspense, fun and quirky characters I enjoyed with well timed humor. This was a “who-done-it” that kept me guessing right up till the end. This was the first novel I’ve read by this author, it won’t be my last. I think I’ll start with The River Runs Dry, or The Clouds Roll! So many choices! Can’t wait to see where this author takes me next!! I highly recommend this book and for you to check out the others!

Great big thanks goes to Rediculous Reviews for giving me this award. I'm surprised and excited to receive this award. In accepting this award I was required to link to the person who awarded me,  http://ridiculousreviewsbysavanah.blogspot.com/2011/03/my-first-award-ever.html (Thanks so much )
Also post 7 things about us, and pass it to 7 other bloggers!

SEVEN THINGS ABOUT ME

1. I started to read for pleasure almost 10 years ago now. I got hired to work in a Christian book store and didn’t read. I love to talk to customers, but the only thing to talk about in a book store are books! I checked them out of the library and started telling my customers about the latest great book I read! They would come back each week and ask me what else I read. I was hooked. Honestly I didn’t realize how amazing Christian Fiction could be!

2. I’m Dyslexic and didn’t get diagnosed until I was 26. My cousin asked our family to participate in a family study to see how many of us in the family were dyslexic. Her young son was diagnosed at a young age and the University of Miami was doing the testing and the study.

3. I didn’t read when I was a kid because it was NOT fun at all. My motto was why read the book when I can watch the movie. It’s easier and a lot more fun!

4. I went to see the movie JAWS and didn’t know what it was about. My friend invited me to the movies and I didn’t ask what we were going to see. I was freaked out from the first scene. I knew some of those movie angels were shot in a pool. I didn’t swim in any kind of water for a very long time and hated the sound track to that movie!

5. I LOVE QUILTS and I LOVE TO QUILT!

6. My husband and I are the founders of The Book Club Network www.bookfun.org

7. I run two book clubs inside the book store I work at and I’m the ACFW (American Christian Fiction Writers) On-Line Book Club Coordinator

REVELL TOUR - LOVE AMIDST THE ASHES by MESU ANDREWS

How Could Job Explain to His Wife That The Life They Once Knew Was Gone?

“No, not my children! El Shaddai, Al-Uzza, by the gods, not my babies!”

“Come, wife,” said Job with a sudden and unexplained calm. “Only one God can help us.”

Drawing characters directly from the Bible and others from historical texts, Mesu Andrews, author of Love Amid the Ashes (ISBN: 978-0-8007-3407-7, March 2011, $14.99) weaves new threads into Job’s story, creating a novel that breathes new life into an ancient tale of suffering and redemption. Andrews began her research at Multnomah University and expanded her studies to include rabbinic traditions, giving readers of Love Amid the Ashes a unique understanding of Hebrew customs during Biblical times.

Most imagine Job sitting on the ash heap, his life in shambles. But how did he get there? What was Job's life like before tragedy struck? What did he think as his world came crashing down around him? And what was life like after God restored his wealth, health, and family?

Andrews tells the story through the eyes of the women in Job’s life. Drawing together the account of Job with those of Esau's tribe and Jacob's daughter Dinah, Love Amid the Ashes breathes life, romance, and passion into the classic biblical story of suffering and steadfast faith.

"Mesu Andrews has skillfully brought the Old Testament story of Job to life in Love Amid the Ashes. You will be moved to tears as the characters reflect the mysterious role suffering plays in our faith. If you enjoy a story that includes a powerful plot, romantic passion, and biblical truth, read this book!" says Carol Kent, speaker and author of Between a Rock and a Grace Place

Mesu Andrews is an active speaker who has devoted herself to passionate and intense study of Scripture. Harnessing her deep understanding and love for God's Word, Andrews brings the biblical world alive for her readers in this debut novel. She lives in Washington.

Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group, offers practical books that bring the Christian faith to everyday life. They publish resources from a variety of well-known brands and authors, including their partnership with MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) and Hungry Planet.

REVIEW:
LOVE AMIDST THE ASHES

By Mesu Andrews
Published by Revell
ISBN# 978-0-8007-3407-7
407 Pages

Summary: Readers often think of Job sitting on the ash heap, his life in shambles. But how did he get there? What was Job's life like before tragedy struck? What did he think as his world came crashing down around him? And what was life like after God restored his wealth, health, and family?

Through painstaking research and a writer's creative mind, Mesu Andrews weaves an emotional and stirring account of this well-known story told through the eyes of the women who loved him. Drawing together the account of Job with those of Esau's tribe and Jacob's daughter Dinah, Love Amid the Ashes breathes life, romance, and passion into the classic biblical story of suffering and steadfast faith.

REVIEW: I was thankful to receive a review copy of a story many people quote from the bible and look to when they are suffering. The story of Job is a powerful one. Meus Andrews states in the author notes how she came up for the premise of her book Love Amid the Ashes! She says, “I hope you can see (through my extensive research) that biblical fiction is so much more than a fanciful imagining of how things might have been. It is truly my heart cry to know how biblical characters experienced the God I know today!”

Having read this gripping, heart wrenching book I can say Mesu has accomplished her goal. Not only did she show how biblical characters experienced God in their lives but she got up-close and very personal in showing the inner turmoil every character had endured watching Job suffer. No matter what came Job’s way he stood faithful to not curse God like his friends and family wanted him to but was a witness to the love he had for God no matter what happened in his life.

Love Amid the Ashes is not only about Job, and the impact he had on his community, family, friends and the world around him. But it’s also about Dinah, the only daughter of Jacob, who was violated by King Shechem. Her brothers avenged this act by killing the king and did some horrible things to the people that lived in the kingdom before they murdered them.

Dinah isn’t mentioned in the Old Testament much so the author had to dig deep to uncover facts she could use to make her story work. Through extensive research Mesu found a way for Dinah to cross paths with Job, a wise man and respected man in his community, who was highly favored by God, and who showed the love of God to everyone he came in contact with.

Soon after Dinah and Job’s paths cross calamity befalls Job. One messenger after the other reports horrific news to Job, first the report that his children are dead, then a report that all his live stock are slain and then to hear that his grandchildren are killed. Soon after that Job’s house burns down to the ground. Job is left homeless and penniless. His wife is used to living the good life and agonizes over their new situation even more so when Job gets deathly sick. She is willing to do almost anything to get money in the house and live the life she is accustomed to.

We read in scripture of how everything was taken away from Job and then later given back more than he had in the first place without all the drama associated with this horrendous situation. The author reveals the heartache and struggle of a man losing his children (the loves of his life), everything he owned and his status in his community.

This author not only shows Job’s terrible situation but on the flip side she discloses Job’s hope and faith in God. Mesu brings scripture alive as she gives the reader a peek into what life might have been for Job back then. This Mesu Andrews pens an amazing story of Job’s authenticity, his passion, love for God and family and how he suffered well. He stayed faithful even when his body was in horrific pain. This story brings this story to life in a real way. You’ll never think of the book of Job in the same way.

Back Cover: Roxi Gold has been shuttled from one foster home to another for most of her life. She longs for a family and will do anything to fit in, even if it's against the law. Soon she’s traveling the country in an RV, stealing rare books from unsuspecting bookstores. She knows it’s wrong, but if she refuses, she’ll be put out on the streets.

Police officer Abby Dawson has seen the worst of society, and not just at work. Her ex-husband wrested their daughter away from her in a bitter custody battle. The job she once loved has become a chore, the world isn’t any safer, and there’s no joy in her life.

One fateful night, a man’s innocent blood changes both Roxi’s and Abby’s lives forever. One searches for justice; the other finds herself on the run until a first edition of The Great Gatsby catches up with her. Will the power of forgiveness set them free, or will they both remain bound by guilt?

REVIEW: I was intrigued by the beautifully bound book and the troubled teen on the front cover. I was thrilled to receive a review copy of such a tension filled, heartfelt book. This novel kept me spellbound on many levels, as C.J. took me through the homey Book Barn - a place I’d love to go and explore its treasures myself. The author’s passion for books and her book experience shines through in this haunting, suspenseful tale of a teen caught in a hopeless web she struggles to get out of. Contrast to a female cop named Abby, a character who feels trapped in a different kind of situation! She too is looking for a way out!

Roxie longed for a family of her own and a place to call home. She was abandoned by her mom and shuffled though the foster care system at a young age, ending up with a distant relative. Roxi felt trapped in the family business she wanted no part of. But where would she go? If she didn’t comply, they’d give her back to foster care and she couldn’t have that.

Abby Dawson is a cop with an attitude. She joined the force to help people and clean up the streets. Abby felt she did very little good when the bad guys she wanted to put away, ended up back on the streets. Life didn’t quite seem fair in the legal system or in her personal life either. Where was she headed? Did her life have any meaning?

Then Roxi and Abby’s life change in an instant! Abby receives a phone call from her dad that rocks her world, and sets Abby on a new path in life. Roxi has started down a new path as well...one she never thought she’d be on – ever. Will this event be the end to both of them? Or will they both seek the truth and be set free, in more ways than one.

The author says, “If you take away one thing from Bound by Guilt, may it be the challenge to look past outward appearances and reach out to a hurting teen in your life. Teenagers, even those with tattoos and nose rings, need people like you and me to love them for who they are. I hope we can be Jesus’ hands and feet and love this generation unconditionally,”

While reading this story I could sense the authors’ soft spot for teens and the people society throws away. This is a book that will touch your heart, mind and emotions. It will also get you thinking about how you can be the hands and feet of Jesus in your corner of the world. C.J.’s a deep thinker and full of love that radiates on every page she writes. She shows how God uses flawed characters’ to do amazing things in their lives if we let Him!

C. J. Darlington has been in the antiquarian book selling business for over a decade. Her passion for books and the experiences she’s had in book selling bleeds through in every chapter. It was enthralling. In the author notes, C.J. mentions she used a real life story as the back drop to this book. It made the story all the more interesting for me. I enjoyed how C.J. took the reader behind the scenes of the mysterious world of antique books, buyers, sellers and thieves. The world that C.J. creates is sincere, interesting, suspenseful and clever!

I can’t wait to have my book club read and discuss this book. You’ll definitely want to read this book, I’m sure you’ll be talking about it to friends and co-workers.

CFBA TOUR- VICIOUS CYCLE by TERRI BLACKSTOCK - REVIEWED

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Vicious Cycle
Zondervan (February 22, 2011)
by
Terri Blackstock

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Terri Blackstock is a New York Times best-seller, with over six million copies sold worldwide. She has had over twenty-five years of success as a novelist. She sold her first novel at the age of twenty-five, and has had a successful career ever since.

Besides entertaining her readers, Terri tackles issues that she hopes will change lives. Her recent book, Predator, was inspired by her experiences on Facebook and Twitter, and her concern that people posted too much personal information about themselves. The book deals with an online predator who uses social networks as his playground. She hopes the book will change readers’ online habits. Her New York Times best-seller, Intervention, was inspired by her own personal struggles with a daughter on drugs. In the book, a mother hires an interventionist for her drug-addicted daughter. But on the way to treatment, the interventionist is murdered, and the daughter disappears. Barbara, the mother, sets out to search for her daughter. Terri modeled Barbara after herself, and poured many of her own emotions and experiences into that character. As a result, many families experiencing drug addiction have written to thank her for telling their story and giving them hope. Vicious Cycle, Book Two of the Intervention Series, releases February 22, 2011. She’s currently working on Book Three.

Other recent books include a stand-alone novel called Double Minds, as well as Last Light, Night Light, True Light and Dawn’s Light (from her acclaimed Restoration Series). She is also known for her popular Newpointe 911 Series and Cape Refuge Series. Terri makes her home in Mississippi, where she and her husband Ken are enjoying their empty nest after raising three children.

Terri has appeared on national television programs such as “The 700 Club” and “Home Life,” and has been a guest on numerous radio programs across the country. The story of her personal journey appears in books such as Touched By the Savior by Mike Yorkey, True Stories of Answered Prayer by Mike Nappa, Faces of Faith by John Hanna, and I Saw Him In Your Eyes by Ace Collins.

In this latest novel of suspense and family loyalty, bestselling author Terri Blackstock offers a harrowing look at drug addiction, human trafficking, and the devastating choices that can change lives forever.

Review: Terri Blackstock pens a compelling novel depicting the epidemic young people are faced with today. I was thankful to receive a review copy of this dramatic, suspenseful story that could be taken from headlines today.

Crystal meth devastates more than the addicts’ body it also destroys everything the addict touches. Edith appreciated her mom and her brother Lance’s support this year as she tried to get off a drug that controlled everything about her and learn how to make it in the world clean and sober. Her demons had laid low at New Hope regeneration center. She could be fooled to think they were gone for good; she knew better. Biggest thing she learned was that she needed God’s help more than ever. Graduation day was near and returning to familiar stomping grounds terrified her.

Edith prayed for a girl she met at New Hope named Jill. She was pregnant, 15 years old, and addicted to Crystal Meth. She left the center one day and never came back. Edith liked Jill and could see how she was distracted by her addict brother and mom who didn’t want her to get well.

Jill got high the day she got home. Her mom gave her some drugs to relieve the pain. She was in so much pain and there were blood on her sheets. What was happening to her? She focuses on the bed and sees a little baby. Her baby! She wraps it up on a town and calls for her mom who used to be a nurse. She begs to be brought to the hospital! Her mom refuses and tells her not to worry!

As soon as Jill looks into the eyes of this beautiful baby her heart wells up with love and she desires to do more for her than her own mother. She thought of New Hope and the help she would need to break the vicious cycle her family has been on. She hoped for a way to save her baby from the horrific life she’s lived.

Terri Blackstock reveals the realistic side of being an addict, and what it takes to break free of the addicted life. Shattering the cycle of addiction takes a supporting family, support group and most of all a personal relationship with Jesus. Terri Blackstock does a brilliant job of getting into the heart and mind of a user and how the drug controls them in every way. I like how this author doesn’t leave the reader there in despair but shows there is hope in the middle of what seems an impossible situation. The addict and their family can celebrate recovery one day at a time with God’s help. This is a powerful book. I highly recommend reading this series! I’m looking forward to reading Terri’s next book.

CFBA TOUR - NO SAFE HAVEN by KIMBERLY & KAYLA WOODHOUSE-REVIEW

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
No Safe Haven
B&H Books (March 15, 2011)
by
Kimberly and Kayla Woodhouse

ABOUT THE AUTHORS:
A devoted wife and mother, Kimberley Woodhouse is a third generation Liszt student, she has passed down her love of the arts to hundreds of students over the years.

About fifteen years ago, Kimberley began writing seriously. Songs, plays, short stories, novels, picture books, articles, newsletters - you name it - she's written it. It wasn't until a dear friend challenged her to "do something with it", that she pursued publication.

Kimberley and her family's story have been on the front page of newspapers, in magazines, articles, medical journals, and most recently her family was chosen for ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. They were also asked to share their story on The Montel Williams Show and Discovery Health Channel's Mystery ER. She has recorded three albums, and has appeared at over 700 venues. Kimberley lives, writes, and homeschools in Colorado with her husband and their two children in a truly "Extreme" home.

Thirteen-year-old Kayla Woodhouse’s zest for writing comes not only from her natural ability, but also from her love of the written word as witnessed by her voracious reading appetite. One of only a few dozen cases in the world, Kayla was born with HSAN, Hereditary Sensory Autonomic Neuropathy, an extremely rare nerve disorder. Unable to sweat, or feel pain, she’s also been through brain surgery. But even through a life of extreme hardships, her ever-present smile encourages others to pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles. In addition to being homeschooled and writing with her mom, she’s an amazing swimmer, and spends up to thirty hours a week in training. No Safe Haven, her first release from B&H Publishers in 2011, written with mother, Kimberley, makes her the youngest author to have a full-length novel published by a royalty paying publisher.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Jenna and Andi Tikaani-Gray are hoping for a fresh start. Though twelve year-old Andi has long struggled with a rare medical disorder, she and her mother have finally received good news from out-of-town specialists. Review: I was thrilled to receive a review copy of such a gripping, action adventure novel. This is a great book for so many reasons. First it’s written by an amazing mother-daughter team. Kayla is 13 years old and writes the POV of the 12 year old girl who has the same nerve disorder she has. Making Kayla’s condition part of the story brought a depth of emotion, suspense and drama to a whole new level. Not only were Andi and her mom running from men determined to wipe them out but there was an urgency to get Andi to a safe place to stabilize her condition.

This book gripped my heart from the start as the action exploded from the very first page, literally. Jenna and Andi try to find help and piece together what happened as the reader is doing the same. Not only were the main characters Cole, Andi and Jenna running from the enemy, they were also battling Mother Nature and all she had to dish out: snow storms, frost bite, avalanches, and dropping temperatures that messed with their ability to get a grip on the side of the Alaskan mountains as they climbed to safety.

Jenna tries to explain her daughter Andi’s medical condition to their pilot Cole. He says, “She’s a real dare devil, huh?”

“Oh, you have no idea. Take a stubborn child, and remove the fear factor. Think about it. If you have no fear of consequences – mainly pain- you’d try just about anything.”

Kayla adds much to the story and gives the reader an insight into her condition they never would have had other wise. Andi’s dialogue, spunk, and her passionate relationship with Jesus added intensity, tension and gave an urgency of their rescue.

This compelling story had me holding my breath, biting my nails and up until the wee hours of morning seeing who would survive. No Safe Haven has it all danger, suspense, romance and characters I cared about long after I finished reading the last page.
This is an engaging, faith-building story written by a dynamic mother-daughter writing duo you won’t want to miss. I’m anxiously awaiting this team’s next book called, “Race Against Time.” After reading No Safe Haven, you’ll be looking for it too!

GIVEAWAY - NO SAFE HAVEN - KIMBERLY & KAYLA WOODHOUSE INTERVIEW

KAYLA'S BIO: Thirteen-year-old Kayla Woodhouse’s zest for writing comes not only from her natural ability, but also from her love of the written word as witnessed by her voracious reading appetite.

She has appeared on ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, The Montel Williams Show, Mystery ER, and numerous other national programs. No Safe Haven, her first release from B&H Publishers in 2011, written with mother, Kimberley, makes her the youngest author to have a full-length novel published by a royalty paying publisher.

KIMBERLY'S BIO: A devoted wife and mother, Kimberly Woodhouse is a creative genius, with a sense of humor and voice like no other. A third generation Liszt student, she has passed down her love of the arts to hundreds of students over the years.

About fifteen years ago, Kimberly began writing seriously. Songs, plays, articles, newsletters-you name it- she’s written it. It wasn’t’ until a dear friend challenged her to “do something with it”, that she pursued publication. A long-time editor and now dear friend, gave guidance and direction, as well as several seasoned authors who have mentored and loved her through this incredible journey.

Her quick wit, enthusiasm, and positive outlook through difficult circumstances have seen her asked to share and speak at conferences, retreats, churches, military functions, and seminars all over the country.

How did you get the idea for No Safe Haven?

Well, it was our brilliant editor (Karen Ball’s) idea for us to write together. Then we just had fun brainstorming all the wild and crazy things about Alaska that we had experienced there. We chose something that would fit well with Kayla’s nerve disorder and knew we would have fun creating a story that put our characters through our own worst fears. 

What made you want to write about a girl that had the same life challenges as Kayla? Did this make it easier or hard to write for you?

We knew that we could make it real and authentic like no one else. We also knew that thousands of people had written in to our website asking questions about how Kayla did this or that. So it really came easy since we understood it so well – having lived with it day in and day out – BUT it was hard to write it. It was hard to imagine what I would do as a mom were I in the same position we put Jenna in. 

What was it like to write a book with your daughter? How did the writing process work for the both of you?
It was amazing. I never knew how great it would be. We both write really fast, and we “feed” off each other like there’s no tomorrow. I definitely feel like it was a God-thing when Karen suggested it – because we hadn’t thought of it ourselves. And now we can’t imagine NOT writing together 

I’ve read of how beautiful Alaska is but you brought out a side of the Alaskan frontier that I’d never read about before-it made the story more compelling to read?

Well – first and foremost – we LOVE Alaska. Loved living there, love going back every chance we get. It really is like the last frontier. It’s huge. Majestic, beautiful, scary, and a land all its own. Even when I lived in Europe, I didn’t experience what we had the incredible privilege of experiencing in Alaska. We just wanted to share our favorite state with everyone.

I heard in a YouTube interview that your family lived in Alaska? How long and what was your favorite aspect of living there? What made you move to Colorado Springs?

We did  We lived there around five years and loved it. We lived on a little island for quite a while and I’ll never forget the thousands of eagles, salmon, whales, and sea lions that entertained us. It was a perfect climate for Kayla – so it really granted Josh and Kayla a childhood that they’d never had before. We had to make the move to Colorado Springs when Kayla became very ill in 2005. And in December of 2006, she had to have brain surgery.

Can you give us a sneak peak into your next novel the sequel to No Safe Haven? Race Against Time?

Race Against Time was so hard to write and yet so fun all at the same time. Here’s the blurb:

Anesia Naltsiine has made mistakes that have cost her-and her 13-year old daughter, Zoya-dearly. But no more. She will prove her worth as a mother and as a breeder of champion sprint racing dogs. Her kennel is so successful that buyers come from all over the world. So why does she still feel so worthless?

Zoya misses the dad she never knew. All she wants is to follow in his footsteps as a champion sprint dog racer. But when she witnesses a murder in their town of North Pole, Alaska, she finds herself thrown into dangers and emotions she can’t begin to understand.

Enter Sean Connelly, a new employee at the kennel with demons of his own. When he discovers macrochips bearing military secrets implanted in the Naltsiine's dogs, a puzzle tracing back to the murder unfolds. Then strange "accidents" start happening; clearly someone wants Zoya silenced. Anesia tells her daughter it's not safe to race, but Zoya, angry with the world- and God-takes off across dangerous Alaskan terrain alone. Anesia and Sean must race against time to save the girl-and themselves.

What do you want readers to take away from your stories?
Our goal for each book is basically the same although each book has its own theme. We want to challenge the believer in his/her walk with the Lord and point the non-believer to the Lord. No Safe Haven tackles trust. Race Against Time tackles forgiveness.

You had Jenna your female lead learning to fly a plane. Is this something you’ve done or aspire to do? It was so real and believable. It made me think you’ve flown a lot!

Wow – thank you! Well, I have to admit, living in Alaska, we flew in small planes a lot. And I always wanted to learn how to fly.  Thankfully, I have a really close friend who’s been a pilot for decades and was my source for all things about being a pilot and flying. He’d have to talk me through each scene step-by-step – sometimes I’d have to call 10-20 times a day while I was in the middle of those intense moments trying to get it right in the story. So a big thank- you goes to Bill Zink for helping me “get it right.”

What was your favorite scene to write?
Oh my goodness, I don’t know if I can answer that. No Safe Haven had so many really fun ones… I’m sure it was one of the ones where Andie was bantering with Cole. 

I wanted to ask you a few of your discussion questions they were really good. “Scripture commands us several times to not fear. Is this an easy command for you to obey? Do you lend to worry? How do you turn your fear over to the Lord? Discuss a situation where there has been fear and the Lord has intervened.

Thankfully, the Lord really worked on my heart in this area. It was very much trial and error as I learned the lesson – but through Kayla’s disorder, through the diagnosis, and all the difficulties that followed – I had to let go. It hit me smack-dab in the middle of my forehead one day: I couldn’t ever know everything there was to know to help my daughter, the doctors would never know everything… only God knew. He made her. He understood better than I ever could. Learning to let go helped me learn how to let go of my fear and say, “It’s okay to not have answers. It’s okay for the doctors to not have answers. God knows and He’s the Great Physician. I’m going to rest in that.”

I enjoyed the humor in No Safe Haven. While on the side of the dangerous mountain Cole, Jenna and Andie use humor to relieve the tension of their serious situation. How does finding humor in the hard times of life help you through? How did it help you change your outlook on life? Things?

Humor has been a saving grace for us many times. I have a chapter in my book Welcome Home titled: If Something’s Going to Happen, It’s Going to Happen to Kim. My husband started saying that years and years ago so that we would be able to laugh our way through. And it’s worked. You really can have joy through every trial.

Jenna comes to a point where she is out of control and has to totally leave the care of her daughter in God’s hands. It’s hard for her because she’s a woman that has always been prepared for everything. She comes to the end of herself and realizes that she can’t possibly protect her daughter from every little thing that could possibly happen every minute of every day. Have you felt like Jenna? How did you cope with these feelings?

A little earlier, I touched on that. Jenna is based on me in that area. I was hoping it would help other people/parents know that it’s a real struggle we all have. With Kayla, we had to learn to control everything in her environment to keep her safe, so that’s why we decided to put our characters through that – knowing how difficult it is to face, and what a struggle it is to let go of the fear.

You talked a lot about mountain climbing in the snow, and how to be prepared for the worst weather in this book. It felt so real. Have you mountain climbed or been to the Sultana mountain range? What made you use this as a back drop to your story?- I Loved it! This added so much depth to the novel because it was not only a race against the bad guys but a race against the physical challenges this dangerous, remote mountain range brought each of the three people running for their lives. What intrigued you about this mountain?

I LOVE the Alaska Range and love the snow and climbing and hiking. We also wanted it to feel real to the reader (so thank you for those wonderful compliments!) so they could get a taste of Alaska. The Talkeetna Rangers were invaluable help to me and I also talked to people who had climbed Denali and Sultana to get the “real” story. Denali is taller than Mt. Everest from base to top (Everest starts at a higher elevation) and the weather is so severe (the weather on Denali in the summer can be as bad as the weather on Everest in the winter!). Approximately 1200 people attempt the climb every year on the tallest mountain in North America. But then there’s Sultana. “The Wife.” Steeper and much more dangerous in weather – only about 20 people attempt that climb each year. I fell in love with this mountain and just had to share the uniqueness in our story.

Could you please share a little bit about your testimony?
I was brought up in a wonderful Christian home (my dad is a pastor) and was saved at an early age. What’s interesting (I think) about my testimony is that I’m a trained musician. It’s what I did all my life – what I went to college and majored in. But God had different plans for me. He gave me my incredible husband (of 20 years this year!) and our two amazing kids. Our lives changed drastically with Kayla’s diagnosis. And one day, I just started to write. But didn’t tell a soul.  When we were moving to Alaska, my friend found one of my hidden manuscripts, read it, and then came and hit me over the head with it. She told me I was hiding my light under a bushel. I sputtered and spewed at her that I didn’t know anything about writing, I only knew music! But isn’t it amazing to see what God can do through a willing vessel, even when we have no confidence in what we’re doing? 

What have been two wow moments for you as an author? What made it a wow moment for you?
My very first mentor – a multi-published, amazingly talented woman, told me I was a true storyteller and I better get to work. Again, I didn’t think I could write, so that was definitely a wow moment.

And secondly – writing with Kayla. She’s so amazing. So talented. So fresh. Every moment with her is a wow moment, and I’m so thrilled I get to be her mom.

What has surprised you about being an author?
It’s so much hard work. Not that I didn’t think authors worked hard – but wow. It’s way, way harder than I ever imagined. But I love it. 

QUESTIONS FOR KAYLA

1.Was it hard or easy for you to write about the life challenges you face day-in and day-out?

Kayla: It was pretty easy actually.  I guess we’ve had to explain things to doctors, family and friends so much that it’s kind of a habit. But God also worked great miracles through writing Andie. As I was writing some scenes (for example the scene where she overheats on the mountain side) I was able to describe how it felt to overheat like I’ve never been able to before. It was as if a light bulb came on, like God gave me the exact words. 

2. What do you hope your readers take away from your story?

Kayla: I hope that people will see Jesus in our/my writing. Every story is different, and different people get different things out of them. I just pray that He will use No Safe Haven to challenge the believer and point the non-believer to Him. I know God has called me to write for Him, and the only goal I really have in writing is that it will point people to God. I guess what I’d really want people to get out of No Safe Haven is that God is in control at all times and that He loves us more than anything.

3. I loved your passion for Jesus that you share in your novel. Can you tell me of a time that you knew without a shadow of a doubt the Lord was with you and very real and would see you through no matter what you faced?

Kayla: Hmmm… I can’t really pin-point just one. God has been by my side so much—every step of the way! I can’t imagine life without Him. Although, up until I was about eleven, I was just going through the motions. Not really on fire for Him. Then over a period of time (I don’t know exactly when, it wasn’t so much a “bang Kayla over the head with a 2X4” more of a “tap, tap, tap on the shoulder”) God really began to take over my heart. I know He has always been with me, but I have to say that the past three years or so have been the best ever. Mainly because I’ve felt God and given my all to Him.

4.What has surprised you most about being an author?
Kayla: How long it takes to get published!  Mom and I signed contracts in December of 2009, finished the book on March 23, 2010 and it’s just now coming out!  LOL But I guess that makes sense, with all that you have to do to edit, get the cover, make sure there are no boo-boos and all that. 

What was your favorite scene to write?
Kayla: I think my favorite scene to write was where you find out who the villain is (but I won’t say any more so I don’t spoil the book!). Every time I read through that scene I giggle (well, okay so I laugh maliciously) and think of how surprised our readers will be!  Either that or the scene where Andie almost cracks Cole’s head open with the MagLight. LOL 

QUESTIONS I JUST HAD TO ASK KAYLA and KIMBERLY!
1.What movie most impacted your life as a kid?

Kayla: The Passion of Jesus Christ. We watched that movie last year for Easter… it was definitely the hardest thing that I’ve ever had to watch, but it’s so powerful all at the same time!

Kim: The Sound of Music. I loved how they gave up everything they had to stand up for what was right.

2.Besides family what three things would you rather not live without?
Kayla: God as number one most definitely!!  Hmm… the other two would probably be my Bible and computer. 

Kim: God. My Bible. Lots of pen and paper.

3.A friend of ours has just brought a time machine – what TWO events would you like to witness in the history of the world?

Kayla: The creation of the world and Jesus’ ministry (walking on water and calming a storm especially!). 

Kim: I agree with Kayla – I want to watch the Creation. And I want to see the crucifixion and resurrection.

4.What three books do you feel everyone should read (besides the bible)?

Kayla: Not My Will by Fanscina H. Arnold (if you haven’t read this book you HAVE GOT TO READ IT! It will change you forever. Literally, I’m not kidding. It’s without a doubt the best fiction book ever written. Although it is fiction—and was written in the 1940s—It deals with the issue that I think every Christian on this earth has to deal with. This is without a doubt my number one favorite book besides the Bible), My Hands Came Away Red by Lisa McKay (the second greatest fiction book EVER! Again, tear jerker and life-changer), and the Dragonkeeper Chronicles by Donita K. Paul (I’ve read this series ten times. No joke!  I love her writing, and will always love her stories).

Kim: You can tell I must have a little influence on my daughter because her first two are two of my choices as well.  Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers is by far at the top of my list though.

5.What three movies could you watch over and over again?

Kayla:
How to Train Your Dragon, Pride and Prejudice, and The Lord of the Rings movies (okay, so technically that counts as five, but who’s counting? )

Kim: Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, and How to Train Your Dragon

6.When you all have family night what is your favorite thing to do?

Kayla: Probably play a board (or card) game and watch a movie. 
Kim: Wow. Same thing.

How did you come up with the title to your book No Safe Haven? I like it, it’s catchy.

Kim and Kayla:
Thanks! We do too. To tell you the truth, I (Kim) was brainstorming with Colleen Coble on the phone and I said, “…they have no safe place to go…” and the fantabulous Colleen said, “That’s it! That’s the title!” Then it morphed from No Safe Place to No Safe Haven.

THANKS Kimberly and Kayla for stopping by and letting us get to know you and your writing journey better.

I’m excited about the contest we have to promote your book at The Book Club Network http://www.bookfun.org/ on "Live" Monday March 21st at 9p.m. Eastern Standard time. We will be giving away several $25.00 gift cards and having the readers do a scavenger hunt to go to your website and others to find treasures.

4 BK GIVEAWAY - SIBELLA GIORELLO - INTERVIEW

SIBELLA GIORELLO BIO: She grew up in Alaska and majored in geology at Mount Holyoke College. After riding a motorcycle across the country, she worked as a features writer for the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Her stories have won state and national awards, including two nominations for the Pulitzer Prize. She now lives in Washington state with her husband and sons.

How did you go from getting a degree in Geology to being a fiction writer?
Well, first of all, I wouldn't have a geology degree if my dad didn't tell me to "fail." His advice when I was leaving for college was to take all the classes that were outside my comfort zone. Even if I was going to fail them. He said, "Don't worry about grades. Worry about growing your mind."
Amazing advice from an amazing man.

And since the Alaska landscape always fascinated me, I signed up for lots of geology courses. That meant adding physics, chemistry, and higher math to understand the geology, and I wasn't just bad at these subjects: I was AWFUL. A math professor once gave me a D and said it was a gift.

But I passed every one of these courses, mostly by writing extra-credit papers. I couldn't do the theorems but I could write about them.
Later, I gravitated into newspapers writing features. Geology was just a minor hobby at that point. But one day I read about the FBI's mineralogy lab. My first thought was: "The Bureau hires geologists?" My second thought was to pick up the phone. FBI headquarters in DC gave me clearance to interview its geologists. They were very smart, very helpful people. And immediately I knew the material was for a mystery novel. Felt it in my bones.

To this day, I continue to rely on forensic geologists to help me figure out the science that comes up in each book.

I love the titles to your books. The Stones Cry Out, The River Run Dry, The Clouds Roll Away, The Mountains Bow Down. How did you come up with the titles? What were the working title to your books; if these weren’t what you started out with?

Fortunately the titles dropped into my lap. Really, like a gift from God. If only all writing was such easy gleaning. Instead it's sweat and doubt and prayers. Many, many prayers.

Where did you come up with the character Raleigh? Why write about a female FBI agent? How did you pick her name? I like it. I like the fact she’s honest about her feelings and her struggle with God to be in the drivers’ seat of her life 24/7.

On my way to work at the newspaper in Richmond, Virginia, I would walk past a decrepit but elegant house on Monument Avenue. Like most readers and writers, my mind wants to daydream. And it amused me to think about who might live in that odd house. A young woman, beautiful but lonely. Her mother, colorful, not quite sane. A small black dog with uncanny intelligence. And a sarcastic boarder who treated them all with love and contempt.

Even before I started writing fiction, these people wandered across the pages of my journal.

But I agree with you: Raleigh's honesty makes her great company. She's not perfect. And she knows it. But she knows God is perfect and He loves her, no matter what.

What scene in The Mountains Bow Down was your favorite to write? Why?

Can I pick two? Both take place in the cruise ship's medical clinic. One, when Raleigh discovers the man she detests is utterly fabulous in a crisis. And two, when she's alone with her thoughts and prayers, and realizes the full scope of life on earth. The same God who made these sky-scraping mountains also knows every hair on her troubled head. Those two scenes really touched me.

In your book The Mountains Bow Down the book’s setting is an Alaskan cruise. What made you pick that as a back drop? The Alaskan mountains, landscape, stones, gems all play a big part of the story. What came first for you, when decided to write this story?

Setting came first. I had been reading Agatha Christe's train-mysteries, marveling at how she kept the story going despite the very confined space. That seemed like a fun challenge, particularly with Raleigh Harmon being a forensic geologist who usually solves crime through soil analysis. On a cruise ship, where would she find geology?

But geology goes far beyond soil, stretching from building materials such as gypsum board to asbestos to the minerals used in lipsticks and face powders. And yes, precious gems. Those are wonderful because of their dramatic background stories and "curses."

For research we took a cruise to Alaska. My family frolicked. I tried to figure out how to kill my fellow passengers -- and the cruise director helped me! A Christian with a heart for art, he took me behind the scenes. Engine room. Captain's bridge. The kitchen full of screaming Italians. He was another gift from God, I am certain. I came home with a notebook packed with information.

I read that you were born in Alaska and you mentioned in the acknowledgements that Belle and Frances were responsible for your idea for The Mountains Bow Down; A. What ideas exactly did Belle and Frances give you that helped in your new story? B. Why set your book on a book in Alaska? C. What helped you in coming up with such a mysterious web of deception, betrayal and murder? Wow! I enjoyed the story very much and didn’t guess who did it until you told me? Of course I thought it was the husband like one of your characters kept saying all through the book! Grin! How did it all work out for you when you wrote the end?

My grandmothers, Belle and Frances, really conditioned me for a writing life. Pioneer women, they told me jaw-dropping stories about Alaska pre-statehood. Belle was kidnaped by the Tlingit Indians and Frances was also the Juneau librarian -- she kept a steady diet of good books. Later, when I was a teenager, we would sit in the criminal courtrooms, listening to cases. Hey, we didn't have television! This was our version of "Law and Order." I loved it.

But all that listening trained me to piece together fictional mysteries. Sometimes we don't really know the truth until the closing argument, or when the jury delivers its verdict. That's often the case when writing. The ending isn't known until it unspools from my fingertips.

Can you give us a sneak peek into what you’re working on now? Have a release date yet?
I'm finishing up The Stars Shine Bright, which will be out next year. Raleigh goes undercover. And it's a doozy. The girl is still so honest it takes my breath away.

QUESTIONS I JUST HAD TO ASK!

What are three things you’d rather not live without?

God, my family, and books

What movie impacted you most as a child? Why?

Fantasia. The music told stories so well, as if written.

A friend of yours just invented a time machine and is going to let you use it, but you can only use it to witness two events in the history of the world. What two events would you love to experience? Why?

Call me provincial, but I'd like to see Alaska during the Gold Rush. And my parents meeting each other. Big world events are too large for me. I always choose the tree over the forest.

Name three of your favorite books you read as a kid?

The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, and Harriet the Spy.

If you could hang out with two people (alive or dead) in the history of the world, which would it be and what would you do? (Besides Jesus).

C.S. Lewis and my great-great uncle who was an adventure/travel writer back in the 1800s.

What do you do to relax and get away from life’s stressors’? I run on mountain trails, a lot.

ANY FINAL COMMENTS FOR MY READERS?

Just tell them thank you. It seems to me readers are saving the world, one word at a time.
