Laura Ford

ABOUT AUTHOR: Laura Ford is a Bible teacher, speaker, and author of women's Bible studies.

She was born in MemphisTennessee, to a missionary family, and lives in Atlanta with her husband and two daughters. Her most recent study, Seeking Purity, is an in-depth study of the book of Hosea.

Nora: Can you tell us how UNDESERVED MINISTRIES came about?

Laura: God never ceases to amaze me at how He uses His Spirit, His Word, and His people to bring together things that we could not dream up even with our best effort!  A friend of mine from many years ago lives in Alabama where she and her husband are pastor and pastor's wife of a small church.  She had asked me back in April if I would pray about coming to speak at their church in Stevenson, AL. and possibly do a women's conference.  I prayed and felt so honored and encouraged that God wanted me to speak to the women at First Baptist Stevenson and possibly some of the women from churches in the same community.  With the conference on my heart, I shared with a woman who was new to our church and our Life Group (small group Sunday school class), that I was a writer and Bible teacher and was invited to do a women's conference.
Laura and her family

The woman's name was Susan and even when I spoke with her, although I did not know her very well, I knew there was something about her that stirred my heart.  Susan was also new to our church as was I and I knew she had joined the choir and I knew she had been very involved in music in her old church.  But it wasn't until the day I saw her carrying her guitar that the Holy Spirit just placed the thought right into my head and heart.  I knew from that moment that Susan was supposed to go to the women's conference with me in Stevenson and lead worship.  The very next night there was a baby shower for another woman in our lifegroup at Susan's house!  I had been in prayer for the last 24 hours making sure God wanted me to ask her.  So when I went to her house for the shower, I walked right to her in the kitchen and she knew right away what I was going to ask her!  Before I even asked, she said, "I'll go with you to the conference and help you in any way you need me too."

Chills just ran down my back and I said, "Yes!

That is exactly what I was going to ask you!"
Laura's precious girls

Then a few weeks later, a woman whose son was in my 4 year old daughters preschool class emailed me and asked if she could come talk to me about food allergies that her son had.  My daughter's teacher had told her that I fed Kate certain food and that I might be of some help.  So I invited her, Ashley, over to my house and we talked about food for kids.  Although, by the end of our conversation we were talking about the Lord.  She expressed  that she desired to have a deeper walk and relationship with the Lord through the study of His Word, so I told her about Seeking Purity and said it may be a study she would like to do.  A little later on there was a Beth Moore Conference in our area and I was praying about taking someone with me.  No one that I already knew was going and so I decided to ask Ashley if she wanted to go.

During that conference, she brought me a beautiful hat with my initials on it and told me she made all kinds of beautifully engraved clothing items.  The entire message that God spoke through Beth Moore was on rising up and building.  God spoke to me and confirmed that I was to begin with Susan to build Undeserved Ministries.  After the conference, Ashley and I went to lunch and I could not contain my excitement about all God had spoken to me.  I knew that He had brought Ashley and I together specifically to hear that message.  So she became part of Undeserved that very day and began working on all of our graphic designs, i.e. flyer for the conference, tickets, and other design items we are using.

Jodi, the pastor's wife in Stevenson, shared with me that prior to becoming a pastor's wife, she had gone to school to set up conferences for various groups in the company she worked for.  We knew that God was going to use her to be our conference coordinator.  So here we are!  The ministry was brought together by the Lord and we have seen Him working in the details ever since.  It has been amazing!  God may allow us to do one conference or one hundred but our heart is for women to come to a place where they are purified and called by the Lord into a deeper, more intimate relationship with Him.  He has placed a message on my heart for the women in Stevenson and has given some beautiful, worshipful music to Susan which she will lead.

We are all four, Susan, Ashley, Jodi and I, completely surrendered to the leading of the Holy Spirit for this ministry.  We have the only expectation that God will bring Himself glory through it and through us.  I have attached a flyer for the conference and if God is leading you to have Undeserved come to your church to worship, fellowship and encourage your women, please visit our website and share your heart with us for the women in your church on the UConnect link.  And by all means, please pray for this women's ministry and that God would do everything He has in mind without us ever being a hindrance to His plan.  Thank you!! 1. My favorite thing about a womans conference is the opportunity to meet other women, and just be a "girl" again. The challenges are great and the time spent with God without interruption is a real treat!

    1. Dear Diana,
Thank you for your response. I too lost a brother and so I sympathize greatly with you and am so sorry for your loss. Thank the Lord that He puts people in our path while grieving to help us cope with our losses.

  3. So many questions. Yes, I seek purity in my relationship with God. So much so sometimes I beat myself up.
I love Women's Bible studies because you get to know other women. My church does not have any.
My favorite vacation spot used to be Jamaica but is now Ohio as I have a daughter, son-in-law, and two wonderful grandsons there.
I quit attending Women's Conference. It was like they catered to a few and not all. I always left feeling left out - even by my own church.
Please enter me in contest. I would love to review your book.

    1. Dear sister, thank you for your honesty about women's conferences. My greatest prayer for any women's conference that God allows me and the Undeserved Ministry team to participate in is for the Spirit to be so evident in everything we do, that by His power, no one would be left out. That is the beauty of Undeserved...we have no agenda except for the One God sets before us. And in Him, no one is excluded. I pray one day you will consider attending an Undeserved Conference. Much love to you, dear sister. Laura

  4. 3) What is your favorite vacation spot? What's one thing you love about that particular destination?

I have been to several states and even to Mexico for a brief stop. I have never been anywhere I like better than the Great Smokey Mountains in North Carolina though. I see such beauty there and there is such a peacefulness for me. It reminds me that I am in my Fathers presence every day, not just when when I'm in that place. I see the beauty of God so clearly there and it helps me to see Him in the "little" things everyday as well. I would love to read your book on Hosea and I thank you for that chance. :)

  5. I enjoyed the interview very much and learning about your ministry.

I have attended many women's conferences and look forward to them. Our church has at least two off-sight women's conferences a year. I enjoy spending time with other Christian women who come together to worship, study God's Word and pray with and for each other.

I would love to read and review your book.

  9. I do feel a need for purity, not so much because of seeking out impure activities or engagements but because there is so much impurity pushing itself into the lives of people from every angle. We are over saturated with impurity in media. The news of the day has sunk from what is relevant to what is the latest gutter scoop. I feel a bit overwhelmed by all the impurity and the related mixed emotions it generates. I feel disgust mixed with pity and sometimes a curiosity about why such impurity thrives. Sometimes I am simply shocked. At any rate, I think most Christians are uncomfortable around impurity and may not have the best plan of action to confront and disperse it.

    1. Thank you so much for your response, Janice. I agree with you wholeheartedly that most Christians are uncomfortable around impurity but either don't have a plan of action or simply do not turn away from it. My prayer is that in our generation, Christians, will become less desensitized to the sexual immorality and overall impurity and begin to heed the conviction of the Holy Spirit. Only in doing so will we even begin to understand the Holy God we serve. Again, thank you and your response was very insightful! Much love,
      Laura

  10. 5. Boundless Love was the title of the 2001 Women of Faith Conference Theme. Five of us from Chapel Hill Bible rode in one minivan to Charlotte, NC to have God speak to us through His Word. The humor and the wisdom of the speakers were inspirational, but I think we enjoyed the time of fellowship with one another even more.

A drawing was held the second day during the conference. Linda Belhorn touched me on the shoulder and said that I was going to win. With 23,000 people in attendance, I thought that wasn’t likely. The odds of winning were 3 to 23,000! The first name they called out was mine!! I was given a bag that had at least $100 worth of prizes. There were five prizes in the bag and five of us in the minivan. Each had purchased $65 tickets, helped pay for the gas, and paid for a hotel room for one night. Since each of my friends in the van made many sacrifices to attend the seminar, on the way home we had a drawing in the car and each lady picked one prize from the bag.

It is still hard to believe that I had won the free stuff. Once again, God had drawn me out of the numbers and separated me from the crowd. It reminded me of God’s hand on my life and of His power and presence in my life.

  13. My first name means pure. So thankful to the Lord He has brought it about in my relationship with Him. He has told me, "I love your soul." I was at a conference at our church Friday night and Saturday during the day. The presence of the Holy Spirit beginning during worship. A time of coming together. I would like to win this book to give to my daughter I am going to go on a flight to see in a few weeks. The Book of Hosea has spoken to her heart of God's drawing. It has been many years since I have gone to a women's conf., but when I did it was an uplifting experience. Thanks for entering me

  20. 3) Our favorite vacation spot as a family is Traverse City, Michigan. We go back every year for a number of reasons. First, my husband wanted to make it a priority that we create special memories with our kids - something that when they are grown and gone, they can look back on and say, "Remember when every year we..." That's so important. Second, this place is the right mixture of escape into God's beauty and a little bit of pampering. I love the beauty and quiet of the Sleeping Bear Dunes. It's God's creation at its best. I have so many beautiful pictures from our various years up there. Every time I look at them I feel that calm and relaxation that I feel when I'm actually there. We have extended our yearly spring trips to include a few fall trips with extended family as well, inviting them to join us to make different and new family memories. Last, it's a time to disconnect from technology and really focus on my family, reconnecting with each other and celebrating the priorities in my life: God first and foremost; my husband, and then my children. I always come home refreshed and feeling closer to those I love.

Thanks for this opportunity to remember and relax for a few minutes. :)

I would love a chance to win your book. I read your article in bookfunmagazine and it was so interesting. Would love a chance to meet you in person someday, Lord willing. clSwalwell@gmail.com

  21. My favorite vacation spot is any beach on Lake Michigan-Ludington area in particular. Somehow the rolling waves and the power of the water stills my heart and allows me to calm down and talk to God. Very peaceful.
The several lighthouses on Lake Michigan bring me back to the bible verse - I am the light of the world.

  24. I am a huge fan of Women's Bible Studies. The thing I like best about them is that they speak to women about our issues. I always feel like I can be real in a Bible Study attended by just women. I can talk about my PMS, etc. without wanting to apologize to any men or feel like I have to self-edit because men are in the room.

  25. 1) Do you feel a need for purity in your life, in your worship, or even in your relationship with the Lord?

Yes, purity is a must in any relationship with God. Purity clears everything that isn't important of that doesn't matter out the way so that God can speak. I practice purity in my life. I am 20, almost 21, and I am still a virgin, because I want to be pure when I get married. I take that same concept and I try to use it in my walk with God. We are the Bride of Christ and He's looking for a pure bride!

    5) Been to a women's conference that blew you away? Touched you deeply? Can you share that moment with us?

I went to only one of the women's retreat/conference that my church puts on. It was an amazing experience! We had two speakers and the first night the sermon was entitled: "The God of More Than Enough" It reminded me that with whatever I need God is more than enough to meet my need. During the day session the other speaker talked about how we sweep things under the rug and don't deal with them in our life but God wants us to be vulnerable and transparent before Him so He can heal those wounds and so we can move forward and not be bound by our past! We prayed for and with each other! We cried out to God with our whole hearts and we released some things that we've been holding onto and became honest with God and honest with ourselves. The fellowship and worship was pure and rich! I look forward to the next time I am able to attend.

  28. I have attended several women's conferences and always get a blessing. Last spring our church group had a last minute cancellation and, since it was on spring break, I took my 13 year old granddaughter. I knew she would like the music and I only mentioned once (ahead of time) that she needed to turn the Ipod off when the services started. She was literally on the edge of her seat during the entire conference. Everyone in our group and even people sitting near us commented on how attentive she was. She has begun to grow leaps and bounds - helping in children's church as well as learning to run the sound system and power point presentations. It was such a great opportunity for all of us.
