Back Cover: When her mother dies, Elizabeth Benjamin heads home to Key West, determined to transform herself into the perfect Southern belle her parents always wished her to be. But nothing goes according to plan. Her crippled brother resents her, the servants do not obey her, and Rourke O'Malley, the dashing man she vowed to forget, refuses to relinquish his hold on her heart. Worst of all, it becomes painfully obvious that her father is not the upright man he appears to be.

As family secrets come to light, Elizabeth is faced with a difficult choice: to do her duty and abandon her dreams, or to leave her life of privilege behind to chase the man her father sees as little better than a pirate.

From the first emotional page, author Christine Johnson throws readers into a world of impossible choices, hidden desires, and heart-melting romance in the steamy south. Readers will cheer for Elizabeth and Rourke as they battle the odds and the elements to secure their future.

REVIEW: After the hurricane in 1846 Elizabeth Benjamin leaves Key West and heads to Charleston to find a husband – her father’s orders. But after her mother dies she asks her Aunt Virginia to accompany her on a crazy voyage home to Key West. She was compelled to help the family out and take care of her injured brother; no matter how unhappy her father was at her return. Elizabeth didn’t have a husband because her heart belonged to Rouke. He’d probably had forgotten about her by now.

The author’s skilled at taking the readers onboard these ships facing incredible hardships at sea and fighting natural disasters moving slowly toward their destination. Elizabeth suspected that her father would not be happy at her return. But married or not she needed her family.

Her father embraces her but is irritated by her surprise return. He bounces back quickly and soon has someone in mind for Elizabeth. Mr. Finch works for her father. It would make a good business arrangement if he were to marry his daughter. Her father pressures her to go through with it. She doesn’t agree. Her Aunt pressures her too! “Do you think Mr. Finch will look favorably on his future wife shunning proper attire, “

Elizabeth replies; “I don’t think I shall ever be a proper wife….I despise shoes and hats, and corsets and all this frippery…teas and visits bore me to tears. The thought of managing a household is in sufferable. I want to do things. Go places. See strange and marvelous sights…I could write articles for the newspaper!” Her Aunts eyes rolled!

Elizabeth finds herself thrown into a world she doesn’t fit into. She has to make choices that seem impossible so does Rourke. Elizabeth finds her mother’s diary and discovers a family secret that changes everything about her upbringing and her future. This is a story filled with twists and turns not only on the ships at sea but on land too! There are themes of forgiveness, redemption, faith and rescue from slavery and pirates!

This is a fun read! Take an adventure in book one of The Keys of Promise series.
